OBI OF OTOLOKPO GETS OFFICIAL RECOGNITION

OTOLOKPO (Ika Weekly) – Otolokpo town in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday played host to people from all walks of life who went to felicitate with the king, HRM. Collins Alioma Ezenwail on the occasion of his official presentation of staff of office by his excellency, the Governor of Delta State Dr. E.E. Uduaghan.

                     

Welcoming the guests on behalf of Otolokpo community, Mr. Dominc Uduh of College of Education, Agbor, said Otolokpo clan has been long identified in history as a very hospitable and peace-loving people, while gave them the covetous Award of the most peaceful community of the year in Delta State in 2000.

                     

He disclosed that the Obi system in the land is by hereditary and an obi-in-council assists the Obi in the governance of his people in accordance with the custom and tradition of people.

                     

Mr. Uduh said the strong spirit of unity and purpose of Otolokpo people has given birth to tangible community self-projects which include the building of Otolokpo maternity in 1960, the town hall in 1974, adding that in the same 1974, the community volunteered free labour to dig trenches for laying of pipe born water from Umunede to Otolokpo immediately after which Government of the then Midwest gave formal approval to extend water supply from Umunede to Otolokpo.

                     

He said they also built Otolokpo mixed secondary school in 1977, and handed it over to government in 1979 noting that the distribution network of electricity supply to the seven quarters in the land, was by self-help efforts and the maintenance of the earth road linking Otolokpo and Boji-Boji, Owa urban has remained the responsibility of the people.

                     

The people of Otolokpo however called for government attention to the Umunede-Otolokpo-Umutu road which is presently in a deplorable condition, Otolopko mixed secondary school, link roads from the town to Boji-Boji Owa urban, Ute-Ogbeje, and Ute-Enugu which have suffered neglect for too long.

                     

They further brought to the notice of the state government the fact that no indigene of Otolokpo land has ever been given any government patronage.

                     

In his response, the Governor, ably represented bi his deputy, His excellency, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN) said the areas of need and requests of Otolokpo people will be channeled to relevant government agencies for necessary and urgent attention.

                     

He appealed to the people to accord the Obi all the repect and cooperation he requires to carry out the duties which the tradition and custom of the land bestows on him, and also advised the Obi to take advantage of the good will and support of his people to establish a solid foundation for love, peaceful and harmonious co-existence in his domain.

                     

He further advised the young monarch to put the interest of majority of his people and fear of God above all other considerations, adding that the land will proper if the Obi consult extensively before taking decisions that affect his subjects.

                     

Prof Utuama prayed that Obi’s reign brings happiness, peace, unity and properity to Otolokpo clan in particular and Delta State in general.

                     

The climax of the occasion was the presentation of staff of office to the Obi by Prof Amos Utuama.

                     

Princess Oby Elvumunor and her silver Gold band was on ground to treat the guests to good traditional music.
