The remains of an astute politicians and
former Majority Leader, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Sonni Akpenyi has
been buried at his family compound, number 1 Akpenyi Street, Agbor.
The burial
ceremony which was held on Friday 23rd September, 2011 had in attendance
politicians, businessmen, top government functionaries, community leaders and
family friends from Delta State and beyond including both serving and former
members of the Delta State House of Assembly.
In their
tributes, the former State House of Assembly members described their
departed colleague as a great politician
and friend who contributed greatly to the political growth of Delta State. They
said the active roles Hon Snni Akpenyi played during his stay in office as the
Majority Leader of the House still remain indelible in the annals of Delta
State history. They prayed God to give the family of the late Law-maker, the fortitude to bear the
irreparable loss.Member representing Ika South, in the
State House of Assembly, Hon Martin Okonta in his remark said Hon Sonni Akpenyi
was his political mentor and detribalized political leader. He stated that the
demise of the political icon and community leader has created a big vacuum in
the politics of Delta State as he is going to be missed for his political
prowess and sagacity.
On his part, Hon.
Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Chairman Delta State PDP Reconciliatory Committee and
former member House of Representatives,
Ika Federal Constituency, described Hon. Sonni Akpenyi as a great leader and
friend who did his best when alive to ensure that Agbor, and Delta State in
general move forward.
Some family members of the late former
Majority Leader who spoke to Ika Weekly said their late father, brother and uncle was a very
loving and caring man. They said he will be missed by all, especially for his
charismatic leadership. They prayed the Almighty God to grant his soul eternal
rest.
The late Hon. Sonni Akpenyi, born
fifty-eight years ago to the famous family of Chief Sylvester Akpenyi, the
Edosoma of Agbor, represented Ika South Local Government Area in the Delta
State House of Assembly two times. First was 1992-1993 under the Social
Democratic Party. Second was 1999-2003 under the Peoples Democratic Party where
he rose to become Majority Leader of the House. He held the traditional title
of Dein Eme of Agbor kingdom. He is survived by his children, family members
and political associates.Dignitaries present to pay their last
respect to the late political icon were Chief J.E. Imudia, Elder John Ehikwe,
Mr. Andrew Egonte, Chief Philip Igumbor, Mr. Sam Nwa-Igumbor, Professor Olom
Okonta, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Hon Martin Okonta, Hon Godwin Ezedom, Mr. Peter
Idion, Chief C. Nwaebo, Hon Ovie Agas, Hon Ejaife Odebala, Mr. Dada Ijeh, Hon Kingsley Agbokigboro, Mr.
Festus Okoh aka Chuky Dandy, Hon Isaac Ulebor, Mr. Christopher Ogala, Mr.
Kainji Aluge Obia, Hon Mike Ekuh, Chief Dr. Emmanuel Tibi, former Delta State House of Assembly members
both past and present, and a host of others.
