Pan Ocean, the oil company in charge
of OPL 275 are planning to relocate’s office to Okpe community in Abavo,
Ika South Local Government Area, Delta
State, is planning to move to Okpe community . The plan was made known on
Monday, 29th April, 2013 when the oil company paid a visit to the community.
The meeting was at the instance of the Obi of Abavo kingdom, His Royal Majesty
Uche Irenuma II, who was represented in the meeting by his palace chiefs.
The
palace chiefswere led by the chairman oil and gas committee in Abavo, High
Chief Isioma Okonta. The reason for the visit Ika Weekly gathered was for
the oil company to familiarize itself
with the community before full exploration activities commences.
High
Chief Okonta in his address urged the people to provide an enabling environment
for the oil prospecting firm to operate, adding that God has blessed the
community with oil, so, it should not be turned into a curse. He advised them
to eschew violence and work in harmony with the oil company.
One
of the elders of Okpe community, Pa Boi Okpiawere, while welcoming the visitors
said that Okpe is a peaceful community, stressing that Pan Ocean will not have
any regret working in the place.
A
senior palace chief from Okpe, Chief Godwin Okonta stated that Pan Ocean is
welcomed to the community anytime they are ready to start work in the
community.
Also,
a prominent youth leader in the area, Innocent Obaseki welcomed the palace
chief led by High Chief Isioma Oknta and the Pan Ocean representatives,
describing their coming as a good one.
He
stated that as indigenes of a peace loving community, Okpe people will always
co-operate with Pan Ocean, but appealed that the oil company should make sure
that what is due the community is given to it.
