THE Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Rosaline Bozimo yesterday debunked the allegations made by the Agbor Chief Magistrate, Mr. Charles Maidoh to the effect that he was not given fair hearing before he was sacked, saying that he was severally invited to defend himself before a panel of inquiry set up to investigate alleged collection of N5,000 bribe for each application for bail he granted.
Addressing a press conference in Asaba yesterday to state her own side of the story, the CJ who spoke through the state acting Chief Registrar, Mrs. Helen Akpotohwo said “the Honourable Chief Judge received a petition titled ‘Misconduct of C.A. Maidoh Esq, the Chief Magistrate at Agbor dated 4th June, 2007 from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Agbor branch which the petitioners alleged as follows:
*That he (Maidoh) collects N5,000 for each bail application from the accused persons and the sureties
*That he was coming to sit and take over nights (fresh cases) when he was on leave with the sole motive of collecting N5,000 for each bail
*That most of the cases he sends to Magistrate’s court 2 Agbor as overnight are custody matters which are murder and robbery cases
*That he does not comport himself as Chief Magistrate when sitting
She went on to say that “on receipt of the petition, the Chief Judge/Chairman, Judicial Service Commission directed the acting Secretary, Judicial Service Commission to endorse the said petition to Mr. C.A. Maidoh for comments which was done through letter No. JSCA/53/Vol.IV/80 dated 6th June, 2007
“That at the meeting of Judicial Service Commission held on 29th June 2007 the acting Secretary reported to the Commission that Mr. C.A. Maidoh refused to receive the letter together with the attachments and considering the seriousness of the allegations the Commission decided that a Committee be set up to investigate the issues therein.
