AGBOR BROAD DAY LIGHT MURDER: NURTW IKA SOUTH EXONERATE SELF

The Chairman National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Ika South branch, has said that it has no hands in the incident of Tuesday, November 22, 2011at Agbor where a man was allegedly short dead.

Chairman of the union in the area, Comrade Augustine Amechi Igumbor disclosed this in a statement he issued to the press at Agbor. Comrade Igumbor stated that it is a well know fact that there was no faction in the union in the area "nor are the members of the union at war" adding that those who were involved in misconduct sometime ago, have long been expelled from the union by the state wing of the union. He disclosed that since he assumed leadership of the union in early 2010, cultism had been proscribed " as our union is not a cult and no member would be accommodated for cult related offences" adding that the conduct of those expelled cannot be linked to the union.

According to him, the Ika South Branch of the NURTW has no business with vigilante group or youth body, pointing out that "it would be very wrong and most unfair for anyone to publish in the news media that myself or our union operates in conjunction with a vigilante group or youth body"

Speaking further, Comrade Amechi who is also the State Treasurer of the union said associations, unions or youth bodies have their constitution which guides their conduct and regulates their operational base, adding that the NURTW was not different as have was no where in the constitution that allows the union to operate with another association or group "especially when such association or groups have no relationship with transport business.

"If there is any crisis or union problems, we do not go to the street, markets or any other place outside our parks, and working places to sort ourselves" he said pointing out that their operational base is their parks, secretariat or any other place that they use for transportation or transport related areas.

The NURTW boss further disclosed that he was in Abuja as at the time of the incident representing the Delta State as the co-ordinator in the union’s Biometric Registration, saying that it was not possible for him to be in Abuja over unions matter and at the same time, be at Agbor in cult related shootings which he said, the NURTW in the area hates
