SENATOR OKOWA’S STAND ON FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL IS DISAPPOINTING – Frank Eghomien

Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN Chieftain and the Delta State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Frank Eghomien has described the stand of Dr Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa’s, the distinguished senator representing Delta North in the Upper House of the National Assembly, on the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government as disappointing and anti-people position.Mr. Eghomien who was reacting to a statement made by Senator Okowa on fuel subsidy removal in his Personality of the Week Newspaper interview with Ika Weekly said “Senator Okowa’s stand on the fuel subsidy removal did not reflect the views of the majority of Delta Northerners. It was disappointingly a bourgeoisie and anti-people position. But because the policy was contrived in deceit and mistrust, Jonathan unwittingly got a referendum of  “No” by the near 90 % of the success of the suspended national strike, clearly sending the message that the most brilliant economic policies, may not necessarily be politically expedient. Mr. Ehomien further said, “do you treat every malaria patient with chloroquine.?  Will the ailments allergic to the drug be comfortable or even likely die? Should the removal of fuel subsidy not have been based on market forces, instead of executive fiat (dictatorship)?’’ stressing that truly, anyone who is not for the people, is really against the people. The ACN Chieftain maintained that he is inclined to support the stance of President Jonathan, obviously because the rich and middle class benefited more from the subsidy than  the  poor, adding, that the economy of a nation borrowing consistently to sustain subsidy with huge corruption is worrying. The lessons of Greece as a nation is not what we should visit on our people, sooner or later we would have found ourselves there I would rather prefer we subsidize the health and education of our people through the public institutions where the poorest of the society would be the end beneficiaries”.
