IKA SOUTH CLEARS GUTTERS, EVACUATE REFUSE IN AGBOR METROPOLIS

There is no gainsaying the fact that
Agbor metropolis is now wearing a new look, since the inception of the
caretaker committee under the leadership of Engr. Andrew Obiazi as proactive measures
have been adopted to clean up all the gutters that have been blocked as a
result of  indiscriminate dumping of
refuse.

Our reporter, who monitored the exercise
saw the chairman, caretaker committee members and the council staff of the
Department of Environment busy clearing refuse from the blocked drains at
Mariere, Charles (by New Lagos/Asaba Road), Osuhor,  and Upper Odozi Streets, as well as other
places where refuse heaps were seen. Several refuse collection trucks were
drafted to the affected areas to ensure that the refuse disposal programme and
operation keep Agbor clean is
successful.

The interim council administration  has also mounted about fifty metal waste
collection bins at strategic positions for residents to use in order to
discourage them from  dumping  refuse indiscriminately.

Speaking with newsmen at the work site,
Ika South transition committee Chairman, Engr. Andrew Obiazi said “honestly, we
want to ask for the co-operation of Agbor residents and warn them not to drop
refuse in gutters again. On our own part, we must ensure that there is proper
refuse management in the local government. We still want to thank the state
government for giving us the opportunity to serve the people of Ika South.”

Mr. John Alika, acting HOD, Department of
Environment, lauded the efforts of the chairman particularly  his resolve to ensure that Agbor is free from
heaps of waste indiscriminately. He noted that any resident caught disposing
refuse indiscriminately will be prosecuted by environmental officers, advising
residents not to allow gutters in their environment to be blocked by refuse. He
also urged them to help keep Agbor clean.

Many residents who spoke with Ika Weekly
thanked the new council boss for his efforts in
making Agbor clean, praying that God will give him grace to do
more.
