BAN ON KADA IN IKA NORTH EAST: ENFORCEMENT YET TO BEGIN

The
enforcement of the ban on the use of commercial motorcycles (okada) in Ika
North East council area of Delta State is yet to begin. A visit by Ika Weekly
reporter to Boji-Boji, Owa Axis last week revealed that activities of
commercial motorcyclist popularly called “Okada” are going on unhindered. It
will be recalled that the Delta State Government had said that the enforcement
of the ban on the activities of commercial motorcyclist in Ika Northeast council
would commence on the 1st  of September,
2014.

A visit to Boji-Boji Owa and
environs shows that Okada riders are still with their stock in trade. Some
commercial motorcyclists who  spoke to
Ika Weekly reporter under the  condition
of anonymity attributed the non forcemment of the  ban to the prompt intervention of traditional
rulers and some political leaders in Ika North East. They pleaded with the
Delta State  government to have a rethink
on the proposed ban on their activities as it will have a negative effect on
their  social-economic life. Some  opined that in some areas like Asaba and
Warri where the ban was previously placed, criminal activities are still on the
high side. In their words, “Go to Asaba and Warri, these are the areas where
the ban started from, crime is still very high, so banning okada in Ika
Northeast is not the best option.” They appealed to the government to
re-elevate its position on the matter.
