It was a pitiable sight to behold the body of Mrs. Christy Okwuwe, a mother of two
children, who was brutally murdered by her own husband, Mr. Lucky Okwuwe on the
night of Saturday 31st December, 2011, a day the whole world was in
serious preparations to usher in the new year and the day that the deceased
celebrated her 31st birthday. Before the ugly incident, that sent
the mother of two to her early grave, she was said to be living happily with
her husband at N0 3 Martin Street, Agbor.
The immediate younger brother to the deceased who
came to celebrate the festive season with the Okwuwe’s while speaking with
newsmen in tears, said his late sister and her husband had no quarrel as they
were living in peace but was surprised to hear through a phone call that his
sister’s husband has matcheted her to death. “My sister and her husband were
living happily before now as there was
no sign of quarrel between them, when I was leaving for church at around 6:15pm. In the evening
of that fateful day, my sister’s husband collected a piece of fried meat from
the meat his wife was frying ahead of
the new year celebration” He prayed that justice should prevail.
An eye witness (name withheld) said he was inside
his house when he heard shout from Mr. Lucky Okwuwe’s house, “When I got there,
I saw his wife bleeding profusely with serious matchet cuts on her head. I immediately took the cloth she was putting on
to tie the wounded parts of her head in order to stop the bleeding. While I was
doing that I saw Mr. Okwuwe walking around the house. A few minutes later I
noticed he was bleeding on the head. As
we rushed Mrs. Okwuwe to Anioma
Hospital, the husband followed, from Anioma Hospital we were referred to the Agbor
General Hospital, and later to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (U B T
H). As arrangement was been made to move her to UBTH, she finally gave up.
Speaking to Ika Weekly after the incident a step daughters to the deceased,
Miss. Evelyn Okwuwe said she was in the house when everything happened. She
said, “her step mother was cooking when her father attacked her”
Ika Weekly gathered that Mr. Okwuwe decided to cut
himself on the head in order to deceive the public that he was trying to fight
back his wife who had wanted to kill him which
in the process she lost her own life. It was also gathered that he
admitted to have killed his wife for no reason when he was brought to the scene
of the incident (his house) on the 1st of January, 2012 by the police
for investigation.
The brutal and inhuman way Mr. Okwuwe, a native of
Igbanke, Edo State slaughtered his wife has continued to elicit sharp reactions
from members of the public. Some of them who spoke to Ika Weekly on condition
of anonymity, rained abuses on him for carrying outsuch a dastardly act on the
mother of his children.
However, Mr. Okwuwe who is a money lender and based
in Agbor has since been arrested by the men of the Agbor police station while
the remains of his wife has been deposited in a mortuary in one of the
hospitals in Agbor.
