Dr. Okowa, the Ekwueme of Owa Kingdom who spoke at the
2010 Distinguished Alumni Annual Lecture Series of the University of Ibadan,
Asaba chapter, said. It was very imperative for a reformed electoral process
that could guarantee a free and fair which can lead to the voting in of
credible persons into public offices in 2011.
He said that he was very interested in a process that
will make the votes of the electorate count, which will make his position truly
valid. According to the SSG who displayed a very high sense of erudition during
the lecture “I will like to be at the Senate through a free and fair election.
The representation of my people of Delta North at the National Assembly must be
anchored on an electoral process that it free and fair, devoid of any form of
deceit and fraud. I am ready to visit every nook and cranny of the Senatorial District to ask for support, which will enable
me gain the mandate of the people of my constituency. Because when you
genuinely get the mandate of your people, you are bound to deliver and perform
to their expectations.”
Dr. Okowa asserted that good governance is a wonderful
product of a free and fair election, which he stressed every Nigerian must
support for there to be the right leadership in place. In his words” good
governance must be anchored on the conduct of credible and generally acceptable
electoral system that can guarantee a level playing ground for everybody. Elections,
when credible, produce officers who are responsible and responsive to the
people and their yearning for sustainable development. Fraudulent elections
produce inept and corrupt leaders.”
