The Chairman, Okpams Vanguard, Ika North East Local Government Area, Mr. Christian Okpambor has alleged threat to his life and family. Mr. Okpambor who spoke to newsmen at his residence in Boji Boji, Owa said that he has received information that some persons were planning to eliminate him and members of his family for what he said was his unrelenting campaign position for positive change in Ika North East.
"I have called the press today (Wednesday, May 12, 2010) to address them on developments bordering on my safety and that of my family. I am doing this to let the public know that there have been series of threats to my life and my family. There is a concerted and calculated evil plot against me by a cabal that is poised to derail my political ambition and career. I am aware that some persons are not comfortable with the change I have been championing for the people of Ika North East, to bring about positive leadership.
"I received information from a very reliable source that efforts and attempts were on to plant a gun and some kilograms of cocaine in my house. After which the police will be directed to storm my house to search it, with the intention of arresting and keeping me out of circulation throughout the duration of the election in 2011. According my source, if that fails, they will send hired killers to my house in Lagos to kill my wife, believing that all of these will soften my stance on the ‘change’ I am vigorously preaching in Ika North East. This same cabal have boasted that they have the police to deal with me, saying that they will write a petition against me to the police to either though the State Commissioner or AIG, Zone 5. In the petition, according to the source, they will accuse me of raising thugs and kidnappers. That I have been responsible for the series of kidnapping that have taken place in Ika North East in recent times, including that of the SSG’s father.
"Part of the plot was to approach one of my aides who they offered N2 million (two million naira) to plant the gun and cocaine, so that I will be arrested and detained throughout the election period, without bail.
"I want to however state that I am not in any way afraid of the threat but I will take it very seriously at the same time. I am doing this to bring it to the notice of the public, particularly the people of Ika nation. Change is something that is constant and I will continue to champion it with my strength and resources. I am fearless in the face of intimidation. I will remain fearless in the face of truth. I will continue to pursue my political career along the interest of the people.
"I want the relevant authorities to be aware of all they are planning against me and the threat to my life, just because I am preaching change. I will continue to forge ahead, I am not in anyway deterred. I expected all these before bringing myself forward to be the sacrificial lamb of my people," he stated.
Mr. Okpambor called on the people to remain resolute in their collective fight to bring about change, noting that he was happy that the awareness is growing with each passing day.
