IKA WEEKLY -The State Commissioner of Environment, Hon Lawrence Chukwuweike Osiegbe in collaboration with Waste Management Board Chairman, Mr. Solomon Gally inaugurated waste monitoring committee for Ika South and Ika North East Local government Areas.
Monitoring committee Chairman Mr. Victor Osehini, said the committee is made up of Environmental Professionals, Police, Civil Defence, Landlords and representatives from the two local government areas. He said Mr. Okonye Sunny represents Ika South, while Mr. Oge Chimekwere is for Ika North East Local Government Areas.
He said the inauguration of Waste Monitoring Committee for Boji-Boji Urban Area is a proof of the determination of the state governmentâ€™s effort towards solving the environmental sanitation problems of Boji-Boji metropolis. He remarked that whenever it rains, most streets in Boji-Boji urban are blocked with refuse, resulting from indiscriminate dumping of waste and erection of illegal structures along drainage channels.
He said the committee will ensure that this ugly experience will become a thing of the past.
Mr. Osehini, said that the Delta State Waste Management Board and other stakeholders has evolved a measure to deal adequately with the problems of waste management and sanitation in the state. He also warned against illegal dumping of waste along the streets, undeveloped plots of land and unauthorized places.
He encouraged individuals to provide waste bins in their homes, and educate the populace to patronize private waste collectors, adding that the committee would enforce all environmental laws and carry out sustained public enlightment campaigns on proper environmental management, ensure the publication of everybody, arrest and persecute defaulters in the Magistrate Court, already approved for the purpose by the state Chief Judge.
