The President of
the Collective Leadership of Onu Ika, Mr. Daniel Usifoh and the publisher, Ika
Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Ekiri–Mekiriuwa Ashien have promised to continue
to partner with any Ika son, daughter or group both at home and abroad that has
the intention of delivering voluntary service to the people of Ika nation. They
stated this during the week while answering questions from newsmen on the
outcome of the just concluded Free Medical Mission to Ika land that was sponsored
by the Ika National Association in the United State of America.(U.S.A).

Mr. Usifoh who in
the President-elect-of Nigeria, Onu Ika and one of the local co-ordinators of
the Free Medical Mission said that himself, Mr. Ashien, Chief Mrs. Henrietta Ajuebon
Egbarin JP and Chief (Dr). Edwin Kalikwu from U.S mobilized support for the
Medical Team. He stated that before the commencement of the exercise they sent
out official letters to all the Traditional Rulers in Ika land. I personally
visited ten of the traditional rulers.. We did not stop there, we sent appeal
letters to our sons and daughters within and outside Agbor pleading for
financial support, particularly the politicians. We also wrote to the banks in
Ika land including the two local government councils. I must say here that one
of the politicians gave us an encouraging
kick start. Right now donations are trickling in from those that
volunteered. We hope that at the end of the day we will come out of the current
deficit. And have more funds to follow up the identified critical case for
surgery.

The Onu Ika
leader disclosed that there was an overflow of patient during the three (3)
days medical exercise as an average of 300 to 400 patients were attended to
treated daily. He asserted that the medical team were not able to treat all the
patients during the stipulated period, hence they handed over the remaining
drugs to the co-ordinators  to look for a
way to dispense them to the patients. He told Ika Weekly that arrangements have
been made for one Dr. Okonkwo to come to the Onu Ika Secretariant in Agbor on
Friday 4th November 2011 and thereafter to attend to some of the
patients, adding that Chief (Dr.) Kalikwu has also made arrangement with Dr.
Mabata, Managing Director of Specialist Eye Clinic, Agbor, to treat some of the
patients with eye problem in his eye clinic. During the exercise the Dein of
Agbor, His Royal Majesty Keagborekwuzi 1 made an unscheduled visit to  Ika National Hall, venue of the medical exercise
and made a cash donation of N250,000 to the medical team in appreciation of the
efforts of the teams. The Dein also of Agbor contacted the University Teaching
Hospital in Ilorin Kwara State to take up two critical cases identified for
surgery which they have promised to do. Mr. Usifoh said that Dein has mandated
him to speak with the authorities of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital
to know the cost of the surgery from start to finish. He, appreciated the
patriotic efforts members of the Ika National Association U S A for the good work
their initiative. and urged them not to be tired, stressing that he and other
concerned Ika people here in Nigeria will continue to work as a team and ensure
that programmes that will benefit Ika people are organized on regular basis.

On his part, Mr.
Steve Ashien commended all those who supported in the three days medical
exercise. He also thanked Chief (Dr.) Kalikwu who came all the way from U.S.A
with his daughter and granddaughter to participate in the exercise. He said
they are happy that the exercise was a huge success in terms of organization,
treatment and awareness “This is the first time we have partnered with our
people in the United States of America and we are happy for that. Now that they
have know that there are people at home to partner with, I think they will
continue to initiate more programmes. We are assuring them and others who want
to render voluntary services to their people that we are ready to partner with
them.  We will continue to help our
people, not minding whether we are paid or not, the prayers alone are enough
benefit for us” He assured that the list of donors will be made publish in due
course,  Mr. Ashien stated.
