The chairman and members of National
Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), joined workers world-wide to celebrate
this years “May Day”.
The
event which featured variety of
activities was attended by workers across Delta State on Wednesday 1st May,
2013 at St. Patrick College (SPC), Asaba, Delta State.
The
programme started with pre-may day symposium at
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) where issues affecting workers government
were deliberated on.
The
issue of salary reduction amongst other things top the agenda of the day.
Speaking
about this 2013 May Day celebration, the chairman of National Union of Road
Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Anthony Igwebuike commended the Uduaghan led
administration for the mutual relationship existing between workers and the
government.
He
specifically thanked the governor of Delta State, for the effective mass
Transit System in the state, which he said has really help to alleviate the
suffering of passengers.
Comrade
Igwebuike appealed to the government to pay the pensions of the senior citizens
(the retirees) as at when due.
He
appealed to the governor, to look into
the bad road network in Old Lagos/Asaba
road and Umunede.
He
stated that if those roads are maintained, or rehabilitated, the buses provided
by the governor will last long.
Comrade
Igwebuike pledged his loyalty to the governor, saying that as Unionist, his
executive is solidly behind Uduaghan’s administration.
He
appreciated the effort of his members for their co-operation since he assumed
office as the chairman. While promising to carry every member along in the
scheme of things. He encouraged them to love one another and live in the fear
of God.
He
therefore pledged their loyalty to the national and state chairmen of the
union, Alhaji Usman Najeen and Chief Ifeanyi Obi for planning to rebrand the
union.
