Youths under the
auspices of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ika South Chapter, has
been charged to be proactive so as to bring transformation to Ika South Local
Government Area of Delta.
The charge was made in an
enlarged meeting of the NYCN under the leadership of Comr. Lucky Omorojie. It
was held on 17th May, 2013 at the Main Hall of Ika South Local Government
Council.
The meeting was attended by
various Community youth leaders, personalities, voluntary organizations and
representatives from Ika South Local Government Council to discuss issues
affecting the youths.
The chairman urged the state
government through the local government Council to look closely to the issues
of empowering the youths so that Ika South local government will be transformed
for good.
Speaking during the meeting, a
guest from a Non Government Organization, Information Action Centre (IAC) Miss.
Ijeh Roseline, disclosed that many youths have been exploited by some group of
politicians, adding, IAC is also interested in youths and women who are ready
to stand for themselves and also benefit from their empowerment programme.
She also told the Youth Council
chairman, to send names of unemployed graduates in Ika South to the IAC, so
that they can benefit from the agency empowerment program.
Some community youth leaders and
members who spoke at the meeting said that security is for everybody and also
encouraged the youths to stand up to defend their communities against criminal
activities.
They all called for more
sensitization programmes to be organized in schools and other places. They appealed to the state government to consider
not banning Okada riders in Ika South.
Responding, the Vice Chairman
Ika South Local Government Council, Barr. Victor Okoh representing the Council
Chairman, Engr. Andrew Obiazi, thanked the Youth Council for their courage. He
reacted to various issues discussed. He disclosed that the council will be
partnering with the youth council to enable them achieve some of the programmes
set aside to develop youths in Ika South.
Another invited guest who is also in the vanguard of
youth development, Dr. Felix Morka, disclosed that the country is not growing,
because they have neglected the youths, stressing that opportunity given to one
youth can bring about social change in the country and make progress.
He commended the youth council
for coming together to discuss the well-being of the society. Dr. Morka
enjoined the youths to use the information gathered from the meeting to help
themselves, and the communities in Ika nation. He supported the youth council
with financial assistance to support their subsequent programmes.
In the same vein, the youth
council constituted a community committee to draft detailed information as it
concerns the development of the youths and pass it on to the local government
chairman and other well meaning individuals in Ika nation.
Comr. Omorojie enjoined the
committee to try as much as possible to meet up with the task given to it.
He advised Host Communities of
oil and gas in Ika land to see the natural resources as a gift God gave to us
to develop the communities and not as a cause.
Evang. Mrs. Okonweze Marline,
immediate past president for NYCN, Ika South who also participated in the
meeting, lauded the group for maintaining the dreams of the youth council and
further advised them to always do the right thing.
