A programme about reading culture, organized by District
404B, Lagos Lion Club, tagged “Reading Action Programme” was held at the Monyei
Memorial Foundation Schol, Boji-Boji Owa on the 7th June 2013. It was a day to
be remembered for all staff, students, pupils, and friends of the school, as

with the school as part of activities marking the end of her tenure as the
current District Governor of 404B Lagos Lion Club.
The
Lions Club which has as its motto “we serve” is represented in 208 countries
with 4.3 million members in 44 thousand clubs all over the world. The clubs
theme for the year is “Hope for the Nigerian Child.” Lion Agbogun in her
address observed that the reading
culture in Nigeria has disappeared. Children are fond of watching television to
an excessive degree.” She said that her humanitarian organization has come to
rekindle interest in reading by donating books and equipping libraries to
impact on the children. Children were encouraged to devote time to reading
daily.
“Read a
book” a week, read newspapers, watch television in moderation, observe full
stops, commas, semicolons when reading were points the children were asked to
always observe.” The children were also taken through hand washing hygiene and
reading competition where Master Dial Chisom won a prize.
The
proprietor of the school Mrs. Liz N. Ogbetuo was full of gratitude to God and
for the club for the courteous philanthropic gesture. She felt elated that her
school would be in the unending list of beneficiaries by Lion Club selfless
intervention through books and teaching. She said that there is no gain saying
the fact that the choice of her school for this years interventionist programme
and its attendant positive impact world be written with Gold in the annals of
the school history. While valued books donated will no doubt improve and
encourage reading culture of teachers, students and pupils, the teaching and
demonstration of washing hands would immensely help the school appreciate the ecological
relationship of man and health and adopt preventive measures against the spread
of diseases and further encourage positive health attitudes and practices. She
prayed that God will continue to reward the Lions Club abundantly in their
collective resolve to better mankind.
