The
police in Owa-Oyibu, headquarters of the Ika North East Local government area
have arrested two young men at Ute-Alohen for stealing fowl. The suspected fowl
thieves who identified themselves as Ubaka and Lucky were apprehended after a
fight ensued between them over who should have the lion share of the fowl meat.
According to the police DPO in
charge of Owa-Oyibu station, DSP Ignatius Nnaji, “the suspected fowl thieves
were apprehended by the vigilante group in the area which later handed them
over to the police”.
DSP Nnaji said that since the arrest
of the suspected fowl thieves on Thursday, 4th July, 2013, investigations had
been going on. He disclosed that one of the suspects, Lucky is a regular
visitor of the Owa-Oyibu Police Station.
He said the suspects are yet to be
charged to court as one of them is sick, saying that after his recovery, they
will be charged to court.
In an interview with Ika Weekly, the
chairman of Ute-Okpu Vigilante Group, Deacon S. Onyeanugwu confirmed the
report. According to him, “residents of the area where the suspects live heard
when they were fighting over the fowl meat and quickly alerted the vigilante
men”.
Deacon Onyeanugwu disclosed that the
suspects are Indian hemp smokers and have also stolen bunch ripe banana from
its stem.
He however advised the youths in
Ute-Okpu and Ika nation in general to engage of themselves meaningfully.
