Onu- Ika
Nigeria, in collaboration with Ika Language and Culture Development Union, over
the weekend held a three day proficiency course with the theme: “Training the
Trainers”, designed to cover sufficient areas in order to equip the public,
private, primary, and secondary school teachers in Ika federal constituency
with necessary knowledge and skill in Ika language. It was held at Ika National
Hall Agbor.
The programme featured teachings
in Ika alphabet, nasalization, Ika numeral and naira, sentence and essay,
folktales and story, Ika greetings, which was anchored by well known scholars.
Chief (Dr) F. A. Onyekpeze, on
behalf of the president of Onu- Ika Nigeria, Daniel S.O Usifoh, welcomed all
who came for the important gathering, which according to him is for the
furtherance of Ika language; which was nearing extinction.
He noted that the proficiency
course wass organized with the aim of equipping people with the necessary
language skills and knowledge to make people proficient in the teaching of Ika
language in institutions and above all to train people that will in turn train
others.
In his words, “Upon you, depends
the survival of Ika language, identity, destiny and the continuity of Ika
culture and institutions. You will throw away great opportunity and cast adrift
Ika language future, if you do not utilize this chance you have been given. All
we know and care for, as Ika language is concerned, may sink forever into the
abyss of darkness. Hence I urge you to embrace yourselves to the humble
assignment and so bear names that will be written in letters of gold in Ika
history. To all participants, I wish you as very fruitful participation”.
He enumerated some of the
achievements of Onu-Ika Nigeria to include: the translation of the four gospels
of the new testament to Ika language; state news and other vernacular
programmes are transmitted in Ika in Delta State Radio and Television; the
compilation of Ika Language dictionary which is on advanced stage; and many.
He lauded the efforts of Post
Primary Board, Zonal office, Agbor and Ika Language and Culture Department
Union for living up to their responsibilities.
