The circumstance that led to the death of a pregnant
mother, Mrs. Blessing Oluchukwu Okerenimkpe, who was married to Engr. Ngozi
Okerenimkpe, a lecturer in the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, has unfolded as
the father of the deceased, Mr. Ogbemudia Jeremiah, refuted the report of his
son in-law in a publication in Ika Weekly
last week that Mrs. Blessing died during child birth at Ugheli Central Hospital on 23rd August,
2011.
Speaking with Ika Weekly, before an eyewitness, Mr.
Ogbemudia who is an indigene of Owa-Eke, Ika North East Local Government Area,
said, the alleged murderer kicked his wife heavily on her belly during an
argument, over her husband’s indulgence
in extra marital relationship with
another woman, which she (Mrs. Blessing) was against.
The bereaved father noted that his daughter went for
medical checkup after the incident, where the Doctor confirmed that her unborn
child had died. He however stated that Mrs. Blessing could not survive despite
medications, as a result of the heavy kick which coincided with the death of
the unborn baby, saying that his daughter was due to put to bed.
Mr. Ogbemudia said he requested for this daughter‘s
autopsy report after her death which her husband could not provide, stating
that Engr. Ngozi, an indigene of Owa-Alero thereafter summoned `
*him in Obi of Owa’s -palace in a bid to cover up the
case that had reached the office of the Inspector General of Police.
He pointed out that he could not honour the Royal
Highness invitation because of his state of health that period, stating that
the Obi gave judgment in his absence and ordered the burial of Mrs. Blessing
without his consent. Mr. Ogbemudia added that the Obi sent him a letter which
stated that his grievances were baseless.
According to him, the State’s Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) have arrested Engr. Ngozi and he has been told that his wife’s
corpse would be exhumed because she can’t be buried without autopsy report.
It could be recalled that Engr. Ngozi, in last week’s
publication, said, he suffered inhuman treatment from his father in-law who did
not allow him bury his late wife unless he (Engr. Ngozi) met certain
conditions, until the intervention of
the Obi of Owa, HRM, Emmanuel Efeizomor II.
Engr. Ngozi have
been remanded in the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody at
the time of filing this report.
