“Comfort and
welfare of Orphans, vulnerable Children and Widows are our priority because we derive
joy from smiles on their faces”
The joint
statement above was made by Prof and Prof (Mrs) Patrick Nwanze Okoh, during the
Community-Based Support (CUBS) official handover of various items provided by
USAID/PEPFRA in partnership with Delta State Government to thirty six widows
through Rural Linkage Network, located at Good Street, Boji-Boji Owa.
However, the
beneficiaries were preselected under the income Generating Activities (IGA),
component of the CUBS project.
In a press
release, Mr. Audu Muhammed liman, Chief of Party, Community-Based Support
Project said that the aim of the body is to meet the needs of orphans and
vulnerable children, families for shelter, food, health, education and other
service through the umbrella of income-generating activities. He noted that
they play a critical role in meeting household needs.
Mr. Liman added
that lack of sufficient income also puts pressure on females, most especially
female heads of household and adolescent girls, adding, “such could push them
to engage in prostitution, robbery and other unlawful activities”. He noted
that, in other to curb the situation, the Community Based support project is
supporting the Delta State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and
Social Welfare in implementing a sustainable income generating activities for
this vulnerable group.
He disclosed that
the items provided are for the selected heads of household, based on an
assessment of their needs and identification of the types of support that will
lead to increased economic empowerment and family income.
Speaking with Ika Weekly, Prof. Patrick Nwanze Okoh
thanked and commended the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) for their untiring efforts in Funding Community-Based Support projects
which have added smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries. He also thanked the
Obi of Owa kingdom, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Efezormor for his support towards the
betterment of Rural Linkage Network.
Prof Okoh urged
the benefitting widows to make better use of their resources in other to
enhance their economic fortunes.
On her part,
Prof. (Mrs) Rosemary Okoh said she was overwhelmed with joy of the good done to
36 that out of 700 widows. While thanking USAID for their philanthropic
gesture, noted such resources given to the widows will go a long way in
improving their living standard.
Prof (Mrs) Okoh
added that materials given to thirty six widows is in accordance with their
line of trade, adding that if judiciously used for the purpose meant it will
not only reduce crime rate but also spur the beneficiaries to contribute to the
lives of others.
