The Federal Road
Safety Commission, Agbor which is having a week mobile patrol tour of Benin to
Asaba expressway has on Wednesday 8th May, 2013 arraigned 71 reckless drivers
who failed to observe the speed limit of 100km per hour.
The Unit Commander of FRSC in Agbor,
Officer Olushola Olusegun while speaking with the press disclosed that the FRSC
organized a campaign tagged “operation shield,”
to help reduce accidents on federal roads to its bearest minimum.
According to the unit commander,
“Benin/Asaba motorway roads is one of the roads accidents do happen regularly
and the corp is not happy about those
high rate of carnage on the road. So we are making sure that officers are
stationed on the road to guide road users, observe the speed limit which should
not be above 100km per hour. From Agbor
to Benin and Agbor to Onitsha vehicles will be properly patrolled to enforce
compliance.”
Speaking further, he said that a special
mobile court is being stationed at Alifikede in Agbor to enable them prosecute
drivers who violate traffic rules, adding that the traffic offenders arraigned
will be prosecuted.
Officer Olusegun noted that driving is a
serious business that involves life. He
urged drivers to drive carefully and should not use expired tyres while
using the roads.
He stressed that 99 percent of the tyres
used in Nigeria are second hand, adding
that these fairly used tyres lead to carnage on the road.
He appealed to the drivers to always
check their vehicles properly before putting it on the road. He also enjoined
passengers to caution drivers whenever they are attempting to over speed or
drive dangerously.
