The Cartaker Committee Chairman, Ika
North East Local Government Area, Princess Ijenwa Okunonke has on 30th , April,
2013 officially flaged off the distribution of Long Lasting insecticidal Nets
(LLINS) in Ika North East local government.
Speaking
in an address, Hon Princess Okunonke stated that the constitution assigned some
basic functions to local government councils. One of such is the provision of
primary Health Care to residents in
the rural areas, adding that people
living in such areas are more exposed to malaria, a disease that is a direct product
of the female anopheles mosquitoes bites. She said that our environment must be
kept clean. We must get rid of all
stagnant water that help in
breeding mosquitoes. She stressed
that to reduce the incidence of malaria especially in third world countries,
the World Health Organization in collaboration with federal, and state
governments along with other organizations in the Health sector and in strict
compliance with the millennium development Goals (MDGS), introduced the use of
long lasting insecticidal treated nets which is freely distributed.
Speaking
further, she stated that most mothers merely collect the net without putting it
into use. She advised all recipients to make proper use of it in their own
interest.
The
head of department of health in the LGA, Dr. Onyeji, stated that the
distribution of the nets at the local level was necessary because of the ever
increasing cases of malaria reported in our hospitals .
