The Executive Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan on Wednesday, officially commissioned the ultra-modern Abavo Market, built by the State Government at a cost of N299, 634, 009.60 and handed it over to the Ika South Local Government Council for management.
Speaking at the impressive ceremony which took place at the market square, Abavo, Governor Uduaghan urged the Chairman, Ika South Local Government Transition Committee to set up management committee made up of Abavo Community and Council Officials for effective management of the market.
The Governor strongly warned the council officials not to scramble for market stalls with genuine traders, directing that previous traders whose stalls were demolished during the construction of the modern market should first be considered in the allocation of market stalls to ensure equity and fair play.
There was loud ovation within the crowded ceremony when the Governor announced that the state Government has approved the payment of compensation to all traders, house or shop owners whose structures were destroyed during the construction of the new market.
Dr. Uduaghan who later cut the tape to declare the market open, commended the Obi of Abavo, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha Irenuwa II and the entire people for the peace and tranquility that exist in Abavo Kingdom and urged the benefitting market women and traders to protect the market and all the facilities in it.
In an address of welcome read by the President of Abavo Clan Union, Mr. Andrew Okoh, the people described the occasion as unique, saying that it was the first time in their history that the people witnessed the commissioning of a modern market of international standard in Abavo.
The people particularly expressed thanks to the Governor for appointing their illustrious son, Sir (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa who is maternally an indigene of Abavo, as Secretary to the State Government shortly after his swearing – in and inauguration as the third Executive Governor of Delta State.
The people appealed to the Governor to extend the same gesture to the tarring of Abavo Township roads and particularly the palace road, being the major road leading to the palace of the Obi and Administrative Headquarters of Abavo Kingdom.
The occasion was witnessed by a cream of traditional and political figures in the state including the Obi of Ejeme Kingdom, Nzemeke Adayere II, the SSG, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Civil Commissioners and members of State House of Assembly including Commissioners for Housing, Hon. Abraham Bobor, Energy, Comrade Ovwuzorie Marcaulay, Environment, Chief Lawrence Osiegbu, Women Affairs, Queen Victoria Ikenchukwu and Honourable Martin Okonta of Delta State House of Assembly amongst others.
And at Ekwuoma in Ika North East Local Government Area, it was celebration galore as Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, the state governor of Delta State commissioned Ekwuoma ultra-modern Market built by the State Government on Wednesday.
The State Governor, Dr. Uduaghan during the occasion stated that the new market was built for the benefit of the people, and that one of the buildings will be used for Adult Educational Centre. He also promised to provide storage machine for preservation of tomatoes.
Dr. Uduaghan also promised to repair all the dilapidated roads in Ika North East Local Government Area. They include Igbodo – Umunede, Old Lagos/Asaba Road, and the narrow road from Ekwuoma leading to Akumazi and Owerre-Olubor.
Obi S.C. Osagie III, Obi of Akumazi Kingdom, said he was very pleased by the new investment brought to Ekwuoma land as he still expect more good things to happen and also prayed God to bless Uduaghan, and members of his cabinet.
