Delta State Government has been called upon to take a
proactive measure that would address the life threatening gully erosion along
Imudia and Upper Odozi Streets as well as other deplorable streets in Agbor,
headquarters of Ika South local government area of the state.

Members of Otu Onye Dozi Ihien Landlords Association
who were reacting to the deplorable road network in Agbor, made the call during
their recent meeting held in the area.

Speaking on behalf of members of the association, the
Chairman, Chief Julius Imudia (JP) disclosed that Imudia Street had gone so bad
that tenants who live in houses in the area were already packing out as a
result of the devastating effect of the deep gully erosion on the street,
adding that shop owners in the area have been forced to close their shops.

Chief Imudia stated that the deplorable nature of the
street aroused the interest of one of the prominent sons of Agbor kingdom, Mr.
Jim Ovia who, he said, decided to rehabilitate the street from Mariere Street down
to Baleke Street.

According to him, no sooner had the contractor
handling the rehabilitation project commenced work that the rain started,
adding that the sand filling and the amended drainage done by the contractor
have been washed away.

“The intensity of the deep gully erosion now ravaging
the area is terribly heart breaking that some buildings in the area are at the
verge of caving in if something is not urgently done to arrest the ugly
situation”, he said, pointing out that it has become extremely difficult to
trek on the street let alone riding motorcycle or driving a car on the said
street.

Chief Imudia, noted that the volume of flood on the
street was so much that it had almost crippled the intervention effort of Mr.
Ovia who, he said, was complementing the infrastructural development initiative
of the Uduaghan led administration in the state vis-à-vis road infrastructure.

The Chairman, therefore, stressed the need for the
state government to come in by complementing the philanthropic gesture of Mr.
Ovia so that the whole stretch of Imudia
Street would be rehabilitated in order to save the
people in the area from serious ecological problem.

Meanwhile, he called on the relevant authorities to
channel the flood along Dr. Whyte, Charles and Mariere Streets to the
Benin/Asaba Expressway as it was done at Baleke Street in order to checkmate
the perennial flooding of Imudia Street even as he urged those representing Ika
South local government at various levels of governance to come for an on the
spot assessment of the ecological problem now ravaging the area.
